Chennai: 6 held for hurling Molotov cocktail at police station
CCTV footage helped to identify suspects.
Chennai: Six persons, including two history sheeters, were arrested by the Chennai police on Sunday for allegedly throwing a Molotov cocktail at the Teynampet police station last Thursday.
Police suspect the gang indulged in the crime because two policemen from the station were regularly harassing one of the arrested demanding money and threatening to book him under the Goondas Act.
On Sunday, police claimed CCTV footage had helped in identifying the suspects. Though there was no damage to property or persons, the incident had created a flutter after the incident happened at the police station situated on Anna Salai.
The arrested were identified as S.Arun (18) from Kannagi Nagar, M.Vinod (32) of SM Nagar, Teynampet, J.Mani (23) from Kannagi Nagar, I.Manikandan (20) of Kannagi Nagar, N.Ayyapan from Kannagi Nagar and M.Karthik (32) of Royapuram.
Police said that Mani and Vinod alias 'Karukka' Vinod are two history sheeters listed in Teynampet police station and Pondy Bazaar police were on the lookout for Mani and Vinod for the last one week in connection with a case. Vinod was furious about cops knocking at his door in the night and threatening him with Goondas Act and decided to show his anger by planning to throw Molotov cocktail at the police station.
His associate Vinod had filled an empty liquor bottle with kerosene and set it on fire before throwing it at the police station. Vinod was on the pillion of the two wheeler (TN66 H 1560) which was driven by Arun. Karthik had helped by lending his vehicle to his associates.
Police said that Vinod, who prepares petrol bombs on demand, had committed a similar crime on August 12, 2015 when he pelted a Molotov cocktail at a Tasmac shop on South Boag Road.
