Chennai: If not for the crowd control efforts of ASI MS Vimalesan and other police personnel, the number of injured people could have been much higher in the Kodungaiyur fire accident on Saturday night. In a matter of minutes, the police team had chased away members of the public - most of them busy taking selfies and shooting video using their phones.
Vimalesan of the law & order wing of Kodungaiyur police station said that even as the fireman Egaraj was trying to open the shutter of the burning bakery, he was chasing people away from the scene along with other cops.
“There were more than 150 people and a majority of them were taking videos and selfies at the scene. We chased them away,” Vimalesan, who is nursing burn injuries at KMC ,told this newspaper.
