University of Hyderabad J&K hostel using plastics to prepare idlis

Hyderabad: The J&K hostel mess at the University of Hyderabad is reportedly using plastic papers to prepare idlis. The students alleged that low-grade plastic was being used, which melts into the idlis while they are being cooked.
The mess serves about 1,000 students. Students said they were scared to eat food at the mess following the discovery, which led to a heated argument with a mess worker.
Former UoH students union general secretary G.S. Suman said, “Though the issue came out today, who knows if they are using it regularly. The students are not getting fresh chapatis which are prepared at about 6 pm.”
He said other hostels were facing problems as well. NRS hostel was closed for 16 days because students were not coming forward to take the responsibility of mess secretary. The ladies hostel opened after 10 days on Monday after being closed for the same reason.
Mr Vasuki Belavadi, UoH chief warden, said: “Since there was a rush in the mess on Monday. they ran out of cloth. They visited a nearby restaurant where a mess secretary's colleague suggested the use of plastic sheets for one or two rounds of idlis.” He said the issue had been sorted out, and the mess superintendent warned. He said he had sought a written explanation, and action would be taken.
