Chennai: Of Ammi and Mummy in Assembly
Fisheries Minister D. Jayakumar said the AIADMK government had already replaced the Ammi with mixer grinder.
CHENNAI: The State Assembly witnessed a pleasant repartee on ‘Ammi’ (traditional grindstone) and ‘mummy’ (Amma, as former Chief Minister J. Jayalalithaa is called) during the ongoing budget session on Tuesday.
Initiating a debate on the demand for grants for health department, DMK member Dr. Poongothai, pointing to the AIADMK rule in the State, said the AIADMK rule will get blown away like the proverbial Tamil saying: Aadi kaatril ammiyum parakkum (the breeze during Aadi (Tamil month coinciding with June- July), which is pretty strong will even turn the grindstone).
Reacting, School Education Minister K. A. Sengottaiyan said, “Aadi breeze will neither blow nor turn the grindstone. But Amma’s rule will prevail.”
Joining his colleague, Fisheries Minister D. Jayakumar said the AIADMK government had already replaced the Ammi with mixer grinder. “That proverb is outdated and your analogy does not hold water. Tamil Nadu will always have Mummy (Jayalalithaa) rule,” Mr. Jayakumar said sending peels of laughter in the Assembly House.
