Vijayawada: Over 11,828 people shifted to safety

VIJAYAWADA: As many as 11,828 people living in low lying areas of Krishna Basin were shifted to the 41 rehabilitation centres in Krishna district. A total of seven rehabilitation centres were set up in Vijayawada city limits.
Addressing the media here on Friday, district collector A. Md. Imtiaz said that they had arranged food for those who had been shifted to the shelters. He added that they were also providing milk for the children and had even arranged a medical camp at the shelters.
He advised the people to call up at control rooms at Ph. No. 08672-252847 in Machilipatnam and 0866-2574454 in Vijayawada in case of trouble due to floods. He said that services of 160 personnel from NDRF and SDRF were being utilised at relief camps and added that if needed, they could avail the services of Indian Army and Navy personnel also.
Referring to crop damage due to floods, the collector said that paddy in 2,939 hectares, horticulture crops in 1,398 hectares and sericulture crops in 20 hectares suffered damages.
Meanwhile, about 100 children of Sri Krishna Chaitanya Seva Trust Children’s home were shifted to another children’s home at Gandhi Nagar at the initiation of Mr Imtiaz. The collector visited the children’s home at Bhavanipuram on Friday and found the home surrounded by floodwaters.
