Chennai: Mentally-ill man runs riot, held
He damages cars, throws stones at residents.
CHENNAI: A mentally-retarded man trespassed into an apartment in Mambalam in the wee hours of Monday and allegedly damaged at least three cars parked in a row in the flat. The man then pelted stones at the residents and also bit the finger of a policeman who rushed to the spot, to secure him.
According to police, the incident happened around 2: 40 am on Monday, when a man in his early 40s allegedly entered Rajathi apartment on South Boag road, T Nagar.
The man carried a bag full of stones, and reportedly damaged three cars parked in the premises. An Innova, a Maruthi Swift and a Toyota, were damaged. The security guard in the apartment premises, Govind Ram, tried to stop the violent man, but he threw stones at him.
Residents of the apartment and locals gathered as the man broke the windows of the house of one Santhamma. Govind Ram alerted the Tambaram police station and a patrol headed by a head constable, which was closer to the crime scene reached the spot.
Head constable Sundhramoorthy, law and order, Mambalam, secured the man, but the man bit his middle finger into two, and fled the spot. Sundhramoorthy was taken to the Stanley government hospital for treatment. A little later, Mambalam sub-inspector Sekar, who came to the spot nabbed the man and took him under custody.
Police identified the accused as Palvadhur, hailing from Assam. He appears to be mentally disturbed, police added. Mambalam police registered a case and are investigating.
