JNTU Hyderabad justifies detention system

Hyderabad: The JNTU-Hyderabad administration on Wednesday announced that the detention system in first year was introduced so that freshers could take the study seriously and excel in it.
This statement comes in the backdrop of demand by detained first year students to allow them to attend second year classes. Registrar Dr N. Yadaiah said that detention system for first year students that was already in place in other varsities was introduced in JNTU only last year.
“This was informed to all the first year students. But still over 11,000 students could not clear the required 28 credits out of the 56 for them to be promoted to second year. After representations from students that they were not aware of the detention rule, advanced supplementary exams were held in which over 5620 students cleared the required credits,” he said.
