National Tiger Conservation Authority carries out tiger census every year but publishes the report on census every four years in the country.

HYDERABAD: The fourth phase of tiger census across the country will begin in January. This will be the first phase of the census in Telangana state.

According to statistics released by the department, despite hurdles in environmental sustainability, the tiger population was growing at 6 per cent annually and this could be improved with proper care.

A sustainable ecosystem can be ensured if tigers are taken care of, said an official from the National Tiger Conservation Division (south).

Officials from the Kawal and Amravati tiger reserves said that the census would help in generating data that would help restore natural habitats that are suitable for tiger breeding.

Officials in charge of the survey have been asked to log the footprint of each tiger that they come across, which will help in easy recognition of the range that particular big cat operates in.

The forest department has been asked to recruit officials for the census. Officials have suggested that each department, officer and staff should set goals for the coming year.
