Chennai: MDMK leader Vaiko and PMK youth wing leader Anbumani Ramadoss on Friday opposed the hydrocarbon project in Neduvasal in Pudukottai on ground that it would ruin agricultural land and ground water in the delta districts.
Vaiko compared the hydrocarbon project with the methane project which was abandoned after strong opposition from farmers. People of Tamil Nadu would not allow the project which would ruin ground water and agricultural land in the state. He urged the centre to cancel the hydrocarbon in Neduvasal and asked the state government to insist on its cancellation.
Seeking the declaration of the delta districts into an agriculture zone, PMK youth wing leader Anbumani Ramadoss no project which endangered cultivation should be allowed in the region. He said the hydrocarbon projects in Neduvasal and Karaikal would affect agriculture and the scheme had been announced without seeking people's consent. The centre wants to convert the delta districts into a place of oil mining, he charged.
Thamizhaga Vazhvurimai Katchi leader T. Velmurugan said the people would stop any scheme that would ruin agriculture in the state. He said the Cauvery delta had already turned into a desert due to betrayal of the centre on the Cauvery issue and the Union government is bent on imposing schemes like the methane and hydrocarbon projects.
