Erratic water supply bothers Vizagites
Drying water sources lead to technical problems in city
Visakhapatnam: The residents of Sivajipalem, MVP Colony, Pedawaltair and a few other areas in the city are facing water crisis due to irregular supply by the GVMC. Even before the onset of summer, there was no fixed time for the water supply and this has worsened after dry conditions crept in.
“Water is supplied to us for hardly an hour and it is so irregular. Some days, the GVMC officials supply water at 9 am and at others, it is after 11 am or 12 noon. The erratic timings of water supply are affecting our daily routine and sometimes we are not getting water at all,” said N.T. Rao, a resident of Sivajipalem.
“The water supply system of GVMC has been so irregular for the past one week that our entire family has been going without water as all of us have to attend duties by 9 a.m. I made a request to the civic officials to supply it before 9 a.m. but there has been no response from them,” said M.N. Sastry, a resident of MVP Colony area in the city.
At present, GVMC supplies 62 million gallons per day (MGD) of water to 1.75 lakh tap water connections in the city. The civic body supplies drinking water in the city through taps for 45-60 minutes duration.
Sources said that Vizag city needs around 100 MGD of water but now the supply is being steadily maintained at 62 MGD. The GVMC officials said that the water supply timings at a few areas in the city were changing due to a change in the water source. Technical issues lead to delay in supply of water, said the GVMC officials.
The water supply general starts from 5 am and goes on till 9 pm depending on the area, but due to some technical reasons sometimes not possible to supply at the stipulated timings.
