BBMP braces for monsoon fury
BBMP claims it has drawn a plan to deal with flooding in the city.
BENGALURU: With the monsoon setting in from the first week of June and the weathermen predicting that it would be an active one, the BBMP claims it has drawn a plan to deal with flooding in the city and avoid possible damage to public and private properties. But, the question haunting Bengaluruean is whether the civic body will be able to actually deliver.
Chief Engineer, Storm Water Drain (SWD), Siddegowda told Deccan Chronicle that the BBMP has drawn a detailed contingency plan and taken up demolition of encroachment of drains to ensure that the problem of flooding is tackled.
The BBMP had identified 224 vulnerable points across the BBMP jurisdiction. Of this, 65 were tackled last year itself. Primary and major SWDs will be desilted and the silt will be transported to quarry by the end of June and tenders are being finalized in this regard.
Emergency works have been taken up at a cost of Rs 32.30 crore at 120 vulnerable points. SWDs will be desilted and remodelled. In some cases, diversion will be provided for storm water to run off smoothly, Siddegowda said, and added that the work was already on at 39 different locations.
As part of contingency plan, sand bags have been procured and Flood Relief Squads have been formed to attend to the rain related complaints such as to clear uprooted trees and overflowing drains.
Major storm water drains where complaints of waste dumping were reported have been secured by erecting fences. In addition, desilting of tertiary and secondary drains have been taken up at ward level.
