Chennai: After witnessing the surge of applications for the seats reserved under Right to Education (RTE) act, the state government on Wednesday has extended the last date to May 26.

As per the schedule, the last date to apply was May 18. During the last three days, the number of applications has doubled.

“We have received 40,000 applications as on Wednesday. After seeing the tremendous response, we have decided to extend the last date,” School Education Minister K.A. Sengottaiyan told reporters here.

To bring the transparency in RTE admissions the state government has made the entire process online. It also released the number of seats available in each school under this quota.

As per the act, at least 25 percent of the seats at entry level classes (LKG and class 1) in private schools need to be reserved for children who are hailing from economically and socially disadvantaged sections.
