Fake NGOs looting public in the name of Rohingyas
The Rohingyas have asked the public interested in giving donations in the month of Ramzan to approach them directly.
Hyderabad: The Rohingya families staying in the city complain that funds collected from the community on their behalf are not reaching them. Instead, the funds are being siphoned off by some dubious non-governmental organisations (NGOs).
With the advent of the holy month of Ramzan, several organizations start campaigns to collect groceries, clothes and other articles for the refugees from Myanmar. Organisations ask people to contribute a fixed sum set for each Rohingya family or in bulk depending on how much people are willing to give
However, there is heartburn among the Rohingyas who have been staying in the city for the last five years. “Several people collect money and goods from Muslims across the state on the pretext of helping the Rohingyas. However, except a bag of rice and oil packets we do not get anything and this has been happening for the last three years. Before Ramzan, several groups come and collect information, take photographs and go. But they never return to us with the promised help” said Kasim, a Rohingya refugee. Another Rohingya, Ikramullah said that the NGOs were collecting money through the social media. “Only a handful of NGOs are working for our rehabilitation. They come regularly to us and provide us with necessary amenities and food. A NGO helped us in getting the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) cards.” he said.
About 4,000 Rohingyas are staying in about 80 camps in Hafeezbaba Nagar and Balapur in inhumane conditions. The families stay in small tents on open plots in underdeveloped areas. Most of the Rohingya men work as daily wagers or some odd jobs at local shops and factories.
The police said they are collecting information on NGOs which surface during the month of Ramzan and collect money from public.
