Bengaluru: Though there is reservation for students from the transgender community applying for post-graduate level courses in some varsities in the state, including Bangalore University (BU), but nobody has availed for this facility so far.

Diving deep into the matter, transgender activists point out that with lack of opportunity to get formal education post-school (pre-University and undergraduate levels) such a reservation serves hardly any purpose.

A transwoman herself, Nisha Gulur, advocacy office at Sanagama, an NGO for sexual minorities, said the lack of basic framework towards welfare for the community in the state itself was the main reason behind this. “While most dropouts from our community occur around or after tenth standard, a reservation for getting an SSLC seat in schools and the same at the PU level would help us better,” she told Deccan Chronicle.

She added that including lessons identifying sexuality among students at the age of 13-15 would also help as an individual at the formative years to understand why a person born male behaves like a woman and vice-versa.
