First 7 NSG commandos scale peak of Mount Everest
Remaining five members likely to reach summit on May 22.
Hyderabad: Seven Commandos of the elite National Security Guards (NSG) successfully scaled Mount Everest on Thursday. This was the first such expedition of the NSG to the highest peak in the world.
“The aim of sending the NSG expedition team to Mount Everest was to instil a deep sense of confidence, pride, develop a strong sense of undertaking unknown challenges and develop leadership qualities which reinforces the motto of Sahas Ki Vijay,” said NSG Director General Sudeep Lakhtakia.
The NSG expedition team comprising 12 commandos left New Delhi on April 1. The team was led by Lt. Col Jay Prakash Kumar and out of the 12, seven commandos successfully reached the peak. The team adopted the south eastern approach, via Solukhumbhu region of Nepal to scale Mount Everest. The remaining five members are likely to reach the summit on May 22.
The idea of sending NSG commandos to Mount Everest was conceived by the then NSG DG S.P. Singh in 2017 while the present NSG Chief Sudeep Lakhtakia was instrumental in planning, training and motivating the commandos for the expedition.
Before undertaking this arduous task, the team had successfully climbed Mount Nun in Ladakh region, Mt Deo Tibba in Himachal Pradesh, Mt Jogin-I and Mt Jogin-III in Uttarakhand, as part of training and acclimatisation to high altitude conditions.
