Hyderabad: Osmania University’s library was on Friday renamed as Bharat Ratna Dr B.R. Ambedkar Library. The protests planned by the alumni witnessed poor turnout and made no impact.
Several police personnel were deployed at the spot as a precautionary measure to thwart any untoward incident.
A statue of Dr Ambed-kar was also unveiled to mark the establishment of the Dr B.R. Ambedkar Research Centre. Former UGC chairman Prof. Thorat, who inaugurated the research centre, said, “The centre should focus on issues like political freedom, making of the Constitution, discrimination, legal safeguards against discrimination, centre-state relations, reorganisation of states, secularism, minority and women inclusion, economic development, labour policy, water and power policy and plans for the poor and their children.”
OU vice-chancellor Prof. S. Ramachandran expressed his happiness over setting up the research centre and said that he hoped it would emerge as a research hub in the coming years.
A small group of OU alumni held a silent protest at the library, but it had no impact on inauguration ceremony.
