Mangaluru: In a rare incident, a beat policeman along with a group of Muslims helped a Hindu cremate his sister at Puttur.
The incident took place at Vidhyapura in Puttur Town police station limits on Saturday. Bhavani Singh (51), an unmarried woman died on Saturday morning and her cousin brother Krishna Singh, at whose house she was staying, found himself helpless as none of the relatives turned up to help him in the cremation.
"It is not clear why none of the relatives came to help out in the cremation. But there was nobody till 2 pm. The beat policeman Manjunath, who got to know about this, decided to help the family. He tried to get help from the local people too. Immediately a group of Muslim youth including Hamza, Farooq, Nazir, Shaukath and Hameed volunteered to help Krishna Singh in taking the body to the cremation ground," sources said.
"The family did not have money. The local people and the policeman pooled money and arranged for the cremation that took place at Puttur," he added. This gesture by the youth was greatly appreciated by local residents.
