Hyderabad: The Monsieur Raymond Tomb at Malakpet has become a hub for anti-social elements with group’s merrying around on the premises.

According to the local people, the premises were recently cleaned up and some restoration works were carried out by the Department of Heritage and Museums. “A watchman is posted at the place to keep a watch on the historic structure. But still many managed to climb over the gates and enter the premises. At any day one can find hordes of youngsters at the place,” complained Ashok Kumar, a local resident.

He said that the activities continue till late in the night with some persons entering the vast premises and consuming liquor. Several liquor bottles are strewn on the premises along with packs of playing cards,” Mr Kumar added.

Michael Joachim Marie Raymond, popularly known as Monsieur Raymond, was a French general in the Nizam's army. A son of a businessman, he travelled to Puducherry in 1775 to set up a business. Instead, he found himself in the shoes of a soldier. In 1796, he was appointed the Controller of Ordnance. Monsieur Raymond set up many cannon ball factories, in the city.

Tourists visit the place every day from various parts of the country to have a look at the mass tomb and grave. “Unfortunately, many tourists return after noticing the boys sitting there. A few smoke hookah while some bring in ganja and liquor,” points out another local resident.

The local people want the authorities to immediately appoint more personnel to guard the place.
