Bengaluru: Bengaluru will soon have separate parking spaces exclusively for bicycles. Rental bicycles can be parked at designated locations in the city for which rental cycle operators will have to pay a certain amount as parking fee.

Parking spaces will come up in central business district (CBD) areas, HSR Layout, Koramangala and Indiranagar. For now, around 271 parking spaces have been finalised and the work has begun a month ago and is expected to be completed in the next four months.

A senior official from Directorate of Urban Land Transport (DULT) said, “We have finalised the parking spaces with help of the traffic police and BBMP. The project is being planned and financed by the DULT with the execution part being carried out by the BBMP.”

“The parking space will have separate stands for each cycle to ensure that they are not crammed and do not fall on one another. There will be signboards put up just to ensure that cyclists and the public are aware that there is a bicycle parking space available. Bollards will also be put up to avoid two-wheelers riding on the footpath,” said an official from BBMP.

The official further mentioned that these parking spaces are carefully planned and designed to ensure that movement of pedestrians is not hampered.

The official also said no operator has been appointed to manage the parking space as the issue had not come up for discussion as yet. However, the official said the matter will be taken up with the BBMP to examine the possibility of even hiring a private agency to maintain the space.

There are also reports that bollards put up for bicycle parking space in Wilson Garden were razed and when checked with a senior BBMP officer, he said that the local people assumed that the bollards were causing inconvenience to the public. “We will talk to the corporator and ensure that these bollards and the space will not be touched by anyone. We have allotted the parking space where movement of pedestrians is not hindered,” he said.

The BBMP officer also added that the work will start picking up pace, as there is demand for bicycle parking areas.
