Virtual event concludes birth centenary celebrations of last Maharaja of Mysuru

Mysuru: Saturday marked the conclusion of the year-long celebration of the birth anniversary of Jayachamaraja Wadiyar, the last Maharaja of Mysore. But due to the COVID-19 pandemic, it had to be livestreamed on YouTube.
The main formal event was held in the Ambavilas hall of Mysuru Palace, with a floral tribute to the late Maharaja by Rajamatha Dr Pramodadevi Wadiyar.
There were only 20 people at the function, including the 27th scion Sri Yaduveer Krishnadatta Chamaraja Wadiyar and other members of the Mysuru royal family, Mysuru Kodagu MP Pratap Simha, and members of the His Highness Srikantadatta Narasimharaja Wadiyar foundation.
Vice-president Venkaiah Naidu attaneded the event digitally along with others including former Union minister Karan Singh, Rajya Sabha MP Jairam Ramesh and the daughters of the late Maharaja Maharajakumari Indrakshidevi and Kamakshidevi from their respective places.
This was the first ever event of the royal family that did not have live participation of the people of Mysuru.
A year-long celebrations were hosted by His Highness Srikantadatta Narasimharaja Wadiyar foundation as a tribute to the multifaceted personality of 25 Maharaja of Mysuru Sri Jayachamaraja Wadiyar.
Sri Jayachamaraja Wadiyar was an eminent ruler, a renowned scholar, writer, philosopher, lover of western music and composer of carnatic classical music, a great patron of art and culture. He was also a great environmentalist, an avid wild life conservationist, who banned poaching for fun in 1931, established Ranganthittu bird sanctuary in Srirangpatna and Sri Chamaraja Zoological garden in Mysuru, and he was the first president of central wild life board.
In her remarks, chairperson of the Srikantadatta Narasimharaja Wadiyar Foundation Pramoda Devi Wadiyar recollected that he was a ruler with varied interests, a renowned scholar, writer, philosopher, wild life conservationist, environmentalist, lover of western music and composer of carnatic classical music, a great patron of art and culture.
