BENGALURU: Koramangala Third Block has turned into a commuters’ nightmare. While motorists have to negotiate through endless number of craters on the road, pedestrians have to deal with broken and missing slabs on footpaths. They are often forced to walk on the busy road and risk their lives. During rains the drains get choked with garbage and roads gets inundated.

Despite being one of the most sought localities in Bengaluru, the streets of Koramangala are pockmarked with potholes and craters and the footpaths too are in bad shape.

At Koramangala block 3, the motorists have to negotiate through the craters and pedestrians using footpaths have to contend with garbage piles, broken and missing slabs.

The residents lament that despite numerous representations to civic authorities and the local corporator, the situation on the ground continues to be same.

“I commute everyday from Koramangala block 3 to HSR Layout and the pothole-riddled roads is one of the major reasons behind traffic snarls. The infrastructural development in this locality ought to be of primary importance,” said Harshvardhana, a local resident.

He is still willing to pin hopes on the recent assurance by BBMP Commissioner Manjunath Prasad that the roads would be repaired by the end of this month. Harshvardhana felt though such assurances have been made earlier, but if this time the civic authority keeps its promise it will be great.

The broken slabs on the pavement force pedestrians to walk on the roads, thereby risking their lives, as the road opposite St John’s Auditorium witnesses heavy traffic and vehicles move at high speed.

Quite infuriated at the corporator for not fulfilling his promise of repairing roads, Ashish Borah said, “The politicians listen to no one and have scant regard for the people they represent. Numerous phone calls were made to the corporator, but roads and footpaths continues to remain dilapidated.”

He further complained that BBMP’s patch work on the road barely last for four months.

Owners and contractors of under-construction buildings in the area brazenly use the footpath to keep the construction materials. During rains sand comes on the road and makes the ground slippery and put two-wheeler riders at risk.

After every deluge, the drains get clogged. The walkways without slabs become accumulate garbage.

Within 15 days, Koramangala will have good roads
Q&A with the Corporator M. Chandrappa

When will the potholes-ridden roads of Koramangala 3 Block be repaired?
I just want 15 days, within which not only Block 3 but all the seven blocks of Koramangala will have a good network of roads. The roads were to be repaired much earlier, but due to torrential rains the work got delayed.

Is there any plan of installing CCTV cameras in the locality so that anyone throwing garbage on the street could be caught?
Yes, there are plans for installing cameras in different localities, among which Koramangala Block 3 is on the list. We assure the residents that it would be a zero-garbage area in the locality.

Are works getting delayed because of shortage of funds?
No, there is no shortage of funds. We are working in tandem with the BBMP. The BWSSB works, involving digging up roads and roadsides, had led to the delay in the works.
