Drunken Erode youth fined Rs 15,000
Major penalty under new Motor Vehicles Act.
ERODE: Tamil Nadu, on the lines of the Gujarat government, may be considering slashing the hefty fines prescribed for motorists violating traffic rules under the recently amended Motor Vehicles (MV) Act by the Central government, but a mobile court in Erode has fined a total sum Rs 15, 000 on a youth on two counts of violations on Monday.
Sources said that the Erode town police during a vehicle check stopped a motorbike rider Raja who was found to be drunk and was also not having a driving license. The traffic hence booked him for two offences under the amended MV Act, which entails Rs 10,000 for drunken driving and Rs 5,000 for driving without a license. The youth was produced before a mobile court whose judge slammed a total fine of Rs 15,000 on the traffic rules violator.
Meanwhile, in another case near Vazhapadi near Salem, Ethaapur police arrested six youth for sexually assaulting a young girl in a forest area on Tuesday. The alleged gang-rape of the girl, who was forcibly separated by the accused boys from her friend, has sent shock waves across the steel town.
