Water-borne diseases plague residents of Golconda areas
Drugs prescribed by doctors have not been effective: Residents.
HYDERABAD: Golconda continues to be in the grip of vector-borne diseases. The situation has deteriorated to such an extent that most people living in localities within the area are perennially suffering from water-borne diseases due to polluted water bodies in the surroundings. Every day, hundreds of patients are approaching the Golconda Area Hospital for treatment.
Mohammed Rafi of Risala, Golconda, said women and children are the most affected by vector-borne diseases. In spite of regular inspections by GHMC and HMWS&SB officials, as well as local MLA Kausar Mohiuddin, lakes in the surrounding areas are still highly polluted. Huge funds have been spent on cleaning the lakes, but authorities have been unable to remove water hyacinth completely, which provides an ideal breeding ground for mosquitoes. “In our area, Shah Hatim Lake and Katora Houz are the main source for breeding of mosquitoes,” Rafi pointed out.
Mohammed Ali, a government teacher, said it is a fact that drugs prescribed by private doctors have not been effective, due to which people prefer to approach government hospitals. That is the reason for Golconda Area Hospital remaining over crowded.
“Regular mosquito repellents are not sufficient for countering the mosquito menace here. We need to take extra precautionary measures,” Ali maintained.
