Coimbatore: In a shocking development, a 60-year-old farmer was cheated with fake photocopy rupee currency notes while selling his goats to two unknown persons near Annur near here.

Arukutty’s tryst with fake currencies came when the farmer of Puvalapalayam village, while busy grazing his over 40 goats near his village pond, was approached by two youth who came in a car and said they wished to buy six goats for Deepavali festival lunch.

Police said the farmer agreed to part with six of his goats, but demanded Rs 33,500 for them in all. The duo then handed him 16 currency notes of Rs 2,000 denomination each besides three notes of Rs 500 denomination and immediately sped away with the goats.

But shortly later to Arukutty's shock, the currencies turned out to be photocopies of the original rupee notes when he showed them to his son back home. The same serial numbers were found in all the currency notes, police said.
