Erode: 2 workers die in stone quarry blast

While the three workers were placing the explosives in the drilled holes, one of them, Senthil, was climbing up a rope to reach the top.

ERODE: In an excruciating tragedy, two workers of a stone quarry near Ammapettai in Erode district were blown to smithereens as the explosives used in blasting a huge rock suddenly went off and killing them on the spot, police said on Thursday.

The stone quarry workers, Arumugam, 38, Senthil, 40 and Subramani, 35, in breaking a huge rock, had drilled some 40 holes and were placing explosives in each of them to pull it apart, police said. The stone quarry situated at Oomareddiyur near Ammapettai is owned and managed by one Boopathy.

While the three workers were placing the explosives in the drilled holes, one of them, Senthil, was climbing up a rope to reach the top. Suddenly, all the explosives went off and several rock pieces which blew off crashed down in high speed on Senthil and Arumugam. Both were crushed to the ground and their mutilated bodies lay in a pool of blood. Subramani was lucky to escape the terrible disaster.

On information, Ammapettai police inspector Kumaravel, Andhiyur tashildar Ms. Malathi and other officials rushed to the accident spot, retrieved the bodies of the two workers, Senthil and Arumugam, and sent them to Bhavani government hospital for post-mortem.

Ammapettai police have registered a case and intensive investigation is on including as to how the explosives could suddenly go off even when they were being placed in each of the drilled holes on the huge piece of rock.
