139 mm rain recorded in Coonoor

COONOOR: Torrential rains, that saw the hill town of Coonoor recording 139 mm of rains in just three hours on Saturday night, played havoc with the Coonoor slopes, as over-flowing Coonoor river in the Krishnapuram area washed away around 19 vehicles, including some a few two-wheelers.
While the weather profile changed for the worst in the night hours in Nilgiris as torrential rains accompanied by thunder and lightning poured in Coonoor hills, the rains created a scare to the hill residents. The rocking rains began to flood the low-lying areas in Coonoor town.
The over-flowing water in Krishnapuram channel, which is a tributary of the Coonoor river, washed away the vehicles parked along the edge of the channel.
While a bridge constructed across the channel was said to be the reason for checking free flow of storm water, residents hindered the relief works for some time demanding re-design of the bridge.
