Hyderabad: Monkey menace stirs panic at Eflu
Monkeys are coming because students feed them bananas, pizzas and burgers. Most of the monkeys come from Osmania University, said a student.
Hyderabad: The monkey menace has triggered panic among students and staff in the English and Foreign Languages University (Eflu). Inmates of men's hostel said that they are staying inside, fearing troubles from monkeys.
The inmates have knocked on the doors of the university administration for help. However, the authorities washed their hands, saying the monkeys are coming from Osmania University. They also blamed animal lovers for feeding the monkeys inside the campus.
Shatabdi Banerjee from Eflu women’s hostel said, “Monkeys are creating ruckus in the campus and hostels. After we complained, the administration is looking into this matter. It had come down. However, of late, it has increased.”
M. Kavya, a student, said, “I was on my way to the class and a monkey tried to attack me. The watchmen tried to help us, but it got more aggressive. We have to check the places before stepping out of the room. My roommate was carrying his lunch and a monkey snatched it. Monkeys are chasing students and attacking the staff.”
Prashanta Mahanta, a resident of men’s hostel, said, “Monkeys are creating terror in our hostel. We have locked ourselves in our rooms.”
A senior official from the university said, “Many students have complained about the monkey menace in the campus and we have informed the administration about it. Monkeys are coming because students feed them bananas, pizzas and burgers. Most of the monkeys are coming from Osmania University.”
The official added, “The monkeys have also attacked the staff in the campus. Even if we chase them away, they come back.
Due to many attacks, we have stopped chasing them away. We have also called the blue cross volunteers. Despite asking students not to feed monkeys, animal lovers at the campus continue to feed them.”
