Thiruvananthapuram: Manaveeyam Veedhi project is on
Meet decides to ban parking on stretch.
THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The demand to make Manaveeyam Veedhi, the cultural corridor of the state capital, traffic-free has increased with the city corporation speeding up efforts to implement the much-discussed project to give a facelift to the popular spot. On Friday, the civic authorities convened a meeting with the members of Manaveeyam Theruv- orakootam to take up the project ahead of the coming elections to avoid further delay.
The meeting decided to ban parking on the stretch. However, no decision was taken on making the corridor traffic -free.
The corporation has set aside '3 crore under the Smart City Project to transform the stretch into a smart cultural street. So far the authorities had failed to reach a consensus with the Manaveeyam Theruvora- kootam, the cultural group, which came up with many suggestions, including earmarking it exclusively for cultural events.
The civic authorities have initiated steps on a war- footing to clear the project before January 31 so that it will not get further delayed due to election code of conduct, which may come into effect from February second week.
D. Reghoothaman of Manaveeyam Theruv- orakootam said that no decision was taken regarding banning of traffic at Manaveeyam Veedhi.
“We urged the mayor to make the stretch at least a one-way to make the spot a permanent cultural street. More discussions will be held and one of our prime demands is that the street should be a friendly space for the physically challenged, children and senior citizens. The project is in the initial stage and we will help in preparing the details of each component,” said Mr Reghoothaman.
He said that mayor has promised to put up traffic bollards when there are events in the street.
“A street gallery, designated space for sculptures and other installations and food joints are some of our recommendations,” he added.
A temporary stage, toilet facility, storage room, green room, water kiosk and coffee shop are planned. “Electrical lines will be shifted to underground duct to convert the stretch into a model corridor. We will have the detailed project report soon. Once it's approved we will be able to invite the Request for Proposal (RFP),” said an official.
