Sedition row: Delhi court grants bail to former DU professor SAR Geelani

The professor was booked for holding a controversial event at the Delhi Press Club where alleged anti-national slogans were shouted.

New Delhi: The Patiala House Court on Saturday granted bail to former Delhi University professor SAR Geelani, who was slapped with charges of sedition. The hearing on Geelani’s bail plea was postponed on Friday as the public prosecutor was unable to argue the case owing to unavailability of bail papers.

The professor was booked for holding a controversial event at the Delhi Press Club on February 10 where alleged slogans were shouted in support of the 2001 parliament attack convict Afzal Guru.

Geelani was denied bail on February 19, three days after he was put behind bars on charges of sedition, unlawful assembly and conspiracy with unknown persons.

According to the police, the hall where the alleged pro-Afzal Guru event took place was booked by Geelani. The hall had posters that were anti-national in nature and people were seen shouting pro-Afzal Guru slogans during the event.
