The victim was identified as Gurajala Rajeswari.
Visakhapatnam: AP Women’s Commission chairperson Nannapaneni Rajakumari on Thursday met a pregnant woman at the King George Hospital here, after coming to know that her husband and in-laws tried to get her to abort her pregnancy and were demanding dowry.
The victim was identified as Gurajala Rajeswari.
A couple of days ago, she was told by her husband Damodar Rao and mother-in-law Lalitha that there was a pregnancy check-up in the hospital.
While on the way to the hospital, both allegedly punched her on her stomach, as she refused to opt for abortion. They allegedly told her that they would not allow her to give birth until she brought additional dowry of `25 lakh. The incident came to light recently and the police registered a case on Wednesday.
Ms Rajakumari condemned the act and promised that the victim would be given a government job. She said that the Women and Child Welfare Department would take care of the baby. “The police should take strict action against those who tortured her for dowry,” Ms Rajakumari said.
Earlier, she consoled the parents of S. Jyotsna, who was found dead under suspicious circumstances at her lecturer’s room in the city recently.
