High Court reserves judgment in defamation case
Hyderabad: Justice K. Surender of the Telangana High Court on Wednesday reserved orders on a petition seeking disposal of a defamation case filed against Firoz Bakht Ahmed, the Chancellor of Moulana Azad National Urdu University. The court was dealing with a petition filed against a criminal defamation case filed by Professor Ehtesham Ahmed Khan, an HOD of the same varsity, who contended he was defamed as the Chancellor forwarded complaints of sexual harassment against him to National Commission for Women, Human Rights Commission and other forums. The counsel for the respondent argued that the Chancellor’s actions resulted in defaming his name. The counsel, stating that “exceptions can be argued at the time of trial”, sought action on the lines. The court, however, reserved its judgment.
Detention order in human trafficking case set aside
A two-judge bench of the Telangana High Court on Wednesday set aside a detention order issued against Nadmupally Saibabu Goud, while allowing a habeas corpus plea over allegations of human trafficking. The bench of Justice Abhinand Kumar Shavili and Justice Pulla Karthik, hearing a plea by Nadmupally Laxman, brother of the detenue, over Saibabu's detention by the Gachibowli police in December 2022. The court said that a detention order was unjustified for a solitary crime and accordingly, set it aside.
Detention order for jail inmate set aside
A two-judge bench of Justice Abhinand Kumar Shavili and Justice Pulla Karthik of the Telangana High Court reiterated the view that the government was mechanically passing orders of preventive detention, hearing a petition filed by Vaishali, the wife of a detenue, Baba Chandekar, who was detained in Cherlapally Central Prison for crimes pertaining unlawful activities. It was contended that the order of detention came to be passed even though the detenue was in jail at the relevant point in time. The bench stated that a detention order was passed mechanically, and set aside the detention order.
SBI has right to issue lookout notice: HC
Justice K. Lakshman of the Telangana High Court on Wednesday declared that the State Bank of India has the power to issue a look-out notice, dealing with a petition against a look-out notice issued against petitioner, Haridas Ramesh, a resident of Jubilee Hills. In a writ petition, he questioned a lookout notice issued by the Bureau of Immigration, on the instance of SBI. The Justice also ruled that the petitioner was not entitled to a show cause notice before such a notice is issued. The court also ruled that the right to travel is, however, an absolute right and that the petitioner can always seek permission from the court concerned for purpose of travel.
