Southwest monsoon to hit Kerala on May 29, says IMD
The monsoon onset date is announced by calculating six parameters including minimum temp over northwest India.
Hyderabad: The southwest monsoon will set in over Kerala on May 29, three days earlier than usual. If the monsoon keeps to the timeline, rain will hit the Telugu states between June 5 and 10, and cover TS and AP by June 12. The model error is plus or minus four days.
“The average dateline of monsoon onset is June 1 (average date since 50 years). However this year the onset is early by 3 days. If the prediction turns right, the monsoon will move north towards Rayalseema Telangana state and coastal Andhra Pradesh by June 5 and by June 12 it will cover the two states,” said IMD, Hyderabad, director Y. K. Reddy.
Last week, Skymet, a private weather forecasting agency had predicted that the southwest monsoon would hit the Kerala coast on May 28.
Last year, monsoon had hit Kerela on May 30, two days ahead of its normal onset date. The normal onset date for the monsoon to hit Kerala is June 1.
