Visakhapatnam: Vizianagaram collector M. Hari Jawaharlal on Friday night recorded a song to inculcate social responsibility in the mindsets of local people.

The song went viral on social media, it is receiving a mixed response from public. While some are appreciating his talent, others are criticising his inaction over serious issues.

The collector has sung at various occasions, including Vizianagaram Utsav along with the then Vizianagaram SP G. Pala Raju, who is presently Visakhapatnam range DIG.

After the centenary celebrations of Maharajah Music and Dance College, he also learnt music for a short period from experts in classical music.

On Friday, the district officers organised a programme to mark the first year of Mr Jawaharlal in the post. During the celebrations, he took the opportunity to record the song aimed at creating social awareness among citizens.

The lyrics highlight the careless attitude of the public towards the district. It focuses on habits such as littering on roads, public nuisance, open defecation, leaving animals on busy roads and not following traffic rules. At the end, the singer seeks coordination from the public to maintain cleanliness in the district.

However, some people from the fort town questioned the collector for neglecting his responsibilities and focusing on singing. For the first time in the past 50 years, Vizianagaram residents are experiencing severe drinking water shortage.

“Municipal water is supplied once in every four days. The irony is the collector has blamed the people for all the wrongs. He should have corrected the officials and the civic body,” a localite commented.
