Unmarried can't have surrogacy
The pending bill wants to end the hiring of women from poorer sections of society to be surrogates.
Hyderabad: The Surrogacy Regulation Bill 2016 has still not been passed in Parliament. Currently, guidelines by the Indian Council for Medical Research are in force and one of the rules is that unmarried couples cannot hire a surrogate mother.
Dr Roya Rozati, senior infertility specialist, who made a detailed representation in Parliament, says that surrogacy is advised for those women who have difficulty bearing a child and “the proposed law is very clear that the surrogate mother has to be from the same fa-mily and not a woman hired from outside.”
The pending bill wants to end the hiring of women from poorer sections of society to be surrogates. But till it becomes law, the grey area is exploited by unregistered centres.
There are more than 2,000 illegal fertility centres in India.
