Watch: Kukatpally is a mess with overflowing drains, open manholes
Work inspector says workers don't want to get inside deep manholes.
Hyderabad: Drains are overflowing at Kukatpally Y junction for more than six months. Though civic authorities are trying to level the pits and repair the drains, the work is on at a snail’s pace, complain residents.
The work started from both ends of the drain, but the key area, where the drain water is leaking from the manhole, which needs immediate action, remains unattended.
When questioned about this, Work Inspector of Kukatpally K. Surya Chandra had a bizarre explanation to give -- “The manholes are at a depth of seven to eight feet and workers are not ready to get into them.”
Mrs G Balamani, who runs a shoe shop near the drain, complained of the mosquitoes that abound due to the dirty sewage water that overflows into nearby shops even with moderate rainfall.
Like Balamani, there are many others who have no option but to take the stench. “I am afraid to even think of the rainy season,” says Balamani.
Another resident, Sheik Mahaboob Basha, who works as a mechanic nearby, said, “Though this is a main junction road. From here, one road leads to Balanagar and another to Ameerpet. Yet the work is not speeding up. When it rains, the entire area fills up with water and people are not able to see potholes. This can be dangerous.”
