Hyderabad: Caste and class were the major factors that lead to the murder of P. Pranay Kumar, according to T. Maruthi Rao’s alleged confession.

During the investigation, when Maruthi Rao was asked had Pranay been from Vaisya community, would he have done the same thing, his emphatic reply was ‘No’.

Maruthi Rao also said that had Pranay been economically well off, he would have accepted him as his son-in-law.

Speaking to this newspaper, SP, Nalgonda, A.V. Ranganath said, “Multitude of factors operated in this case, amongst which caste in one of the most important one. The other factors were Pranay’s economic background and that he had not excelled in studies.”

There was not a single inter-caste marriage in Maruthi Rao’s clan, Ranganath said quoting the accused. Thus, he was shamed by his community and within his close circles and himself felt humiliated, he said.
