Hyderabad: The Hyderabad High Court on Tuesday asked the Telangana home department under which provision of law had the Cyberabad police commissioner issued a circular on July 23, mandating that drivers carry their Aadhaar cards along with other documents.

A division bench comprising acting Chief Justice Ramesh Ranganathan and Justice A. Shankar Narayana was dealing with a PIL by city resident Y. Soma Raju, which contended that the action of the commissioner in issuing the circular was illegal.

While informing the court that the commissioner had declared that the circular was in force with effect from July 24, the petitioner urged the court to direct authorities not to insist on drivers carrying Aadhaar cards.

When the bench sought the reaction from counsel of the home department, Mr Venu Gopal said it was neither a circular nor a memo, but a press note issued by the commissioner.

Counsel explained that in view of the fact that most drivers did not carry their driving licences, the commissioner issued the press note advising drivers to carry Aadhaar cards to establish their identity in case they were not carrying their licence.

The High Court bench asked counsel to file the affidavit explaining under which provision of law the commissioner had asked people to carry Aadhaar cards.

Success in Veena Vani case is remote, fear doctors
The state government on Tuesday told the Hyderabad High Court that doctors, after due deliberations, had arrived at a conclusion that if at all doctors go in for a surgery to separate the conjoined twins Veena and Vani, the possibility of success was remote.

A division bench comprising acting Chief Justice Ramesh Ranganathan and Justice A. Shankar Narayana was hearing a PIL filed by the Helping Hand Foundation questioning the inordinate delay in taking a decision on separating the twins.

Government special counsel Sharath Kumar told the court that doctors from abroad had also concluded that the success rate was minimal for the surgery. He said the government was taking special care of the twins at Niloufer Hospital.
