Warangal: Diwali may be the festival of lights, but not everyone in the country is fortunate enough to be able to celebrate it. While most people choose to spend their money on fireworks, a group of youngsters in Warangal has decided to help the less-fortunate instead.

After reading about the story of Burra Sunitha and her children in the Deccan Chronicle, a group of philanthropists came together and formed a WhatsApp group called Mana Muchatlu to help the family celebrate Diwali.

Burra Sunitha’s husband died of dengue eight years ago, leaving her to care for her mentally challenged daughter and physically challenged son. Her 24-year-old son, Sravan, was affected by a nervous disorder at the age of 14.

His hands and legs became extremely weak and he also turned deaf and mute.

Sunitha was forced to sell her only piece of land for her son’s treatment, but it proved to be futile. Now, the family receives a disabled person’s pension from the state government, but most of it goes towards the purchase of the medicines that Sravan needs.

Members of the Mana Muchatlu group have raised funds to bring some joy to the family on the occasion of Diwali.

Madhusudhan Peru-mandla, a member of the group, says, “Instead of spending money on crackers, we decided to bring some light to this family. We collected the money that we would have otherwise spent on crackers and bought items for the family, and this has given us immense happiness.”

Members of the group have bought the family new clothes, handloom blankets, sweets, 100 kg of rice and other daily essentials. The family is deeply grateful to them for their help.
