Alappuzha: The Alappuzha district administration has launched a programme titled 'Oppam' to improve the  living standards of children belonging to scheduled caste and scheduled tribe communities. District collector  T.V. Anupama said that this programme was initiated as  it was found that the number of dropouts from SC/ST was  increasing. 'Oppam' is aimed at the overall development of the students in the district.

The collector who  inaugurated a website of the project  said that 500 students of  various schools in the district will benefit from the scheme.   Their education will be monitored and they  will be helped to find jobs. The project is being implemented by the district scheduled caste and scheduled tribes development department. Each student from the  community will get a mentor. “This will make them good social beings and self-sufficient in life. The children will be  trained to tackle the challenges in their  life and  find solutions,'' she added.
