Hyderabad: TS energy minister G. Jagadish Reddy on Tuesday said farmers and farmer welfare associations have requested the government to supply power for 9 hours to the agriculture sector, in two spells — six  hours during the day and three hours at night.

The minister said that the power distribution companies and Transco have started giving 9-hour uninterrupted power supply to agriculture sector during day time from April 1 onwards as per the orders of Chief Minister K. Chandrasekhar Rao.

However, the farmers and their welfare associations made representations to the government stating that due to drought in the state in the last two years, there is hardly any ground water, as such power supply should be in two spells so that there is enough time for replenishment of whatever little groundwater is available.

Accordingly the government will give supply for six hours day time and three hours night time, he said.
