Telangana to act tough on auto drivers
These decisions were taken during a co-ordination committee meeting of the Transport department, traffic police among others.
Hyderabad: The Telangana Transport department has decided to cancel permits - from May 16 - of auto drivers who fail to install regulation fare meters, ply without a licence, modify interiors to accommodate more passengers and charge unfair amounts from passengers.
Joint Transport Commissioner T. Raghunath and DCP Traffic Mr A.V. Ranganath said a month’s time is being provided to autos drivers to fall in line. Permits of autos entering the city from neighbouring Mahbubnagar, Ranga Reddy, Medak and Nalgonda districts will also be cancelled if they are found flouting rules.
The possibility of changing over to a GPS-based fare system, where a passenger pays an amount based on digitally-calculated distance has also been explored.
