Man distributes water in his ambulance in Kottayam
Supply in wards of Kottayam municipality with no water connection.
Kottayam: In view of the acute drinking water shortage in various parts of Kottayam town, a native of Nattakom near here is distributing drinking water to the public at a few places in the town much to the relief of the public in the region.
Binoop, who is running an ambulance unit at Samkranthi and a funeral service office at Nattakom, has distributed more than 20,000 litres of drinking water to the people of the 30th ward and 44th ward of the municipality till Wednesday.
There is no municipality pipeline to two of the wards and hence the residents are depending on the seven thousand litres of water supplied every week by the municipality. However, that is inadequate to cater to the needs of the residents.
Mr Binoop said that he decided to supply drinking water free of cost to the public taking into account their necessities.
“I had decided to supply the water since the residents were suffering due to the acute shortage of the drinking water. This is also a charity work which is beneficial to a large number of the people of the region,” he said.
The supply and distribution of water has been entrusted to a regular supplier of the drinking water to the municipality. More than 60 houses were given water on Tuesday and Wednesday.
Sanal Thampy, the councillor of the ward number 44 told this newspaper that the residents have benefiting immensely from the supply of water for the past two days.
Mr Binoop said that he is planning to distribute water for the entire summer season as the water shortage seems to persist.
