Hyderabad: Autorickshaw unions to brazen it out
They also wanted the government to suspend Uber and Ola cabs until they were converted to meter-fare based services.
Hyderabad: Leaders of major autorickshaw unions affiliated to the Aituc, Citu, Intuc, BMS and other associations served notice of an indefinite strike from Sunday midnight. The unions wanted the special drive by traffic cops and the transport department to cancel permits for violation of the Motor Vehicles Act to be stopped.
A delegation of leaders of 10 unions led by Mr B. Venkatesham, who is affiliated to the Aituc, and Mr A. Sathi Reddy of the Telangana Auto Drivers Samakhya met transport commissioner Sandeep Kumar Sultania on Thursday and said they would go on strike if the special drive was not stopped. They also wanted the government to suspend Uber and Ola cabs until they were converted to meter-fare based services.
Transport officials are likely to hold talks with the unions. Meanwhile traffic cops continued their drive and penalised 300 autos at railway and bus stations. The drivers were found without licence and without fare-meters, having made permanent changes in seating.
