Kerala education department panel calls to advance school timings
The classes for higher secondary section now begin at 9 a.m. and standard I to Class X at 10 am.
Thiruvananthapuram: The Quality Improvement Programme (QIP) cell of the general education department has recommended changes in school timings from the coming academic year.
The cell has suggested that the school hours should be from 8.30 a.m. to 1.30 p.m. without major break, or from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. with a lunch interval for one hour at 12 noon. The final decision will be taken by the government.
Starting the classes early would give more time to both the students and teachers in the afternoon for preparations. Studies have also found that classes in the morning are better.
The recommendation was based on a directive of the Kerala State Commission for Protection of Child Rights (KeSCPCR) to the general education department to make the academic hours earlier.
Most of the CBSE and ICSE syllabus schools now commence their classes early in the morning and end them by afternoon.
The classes for higher secondary section now begin at 9 a.m. and standard I to Class X at 10 am. This has disrupted the classes in many schools due to two prayer timings.
The QIP committee also wanted the state government to ask aided and state school teachers and staff members of the general education department to send their wards to government or aided schools.
