Tamil Nadu: Now an exclusive operation theatre for newborns
As the operation theatres are air conditioned, the beds will help protect the babies, the doctor added.
Chennai: The Institute for Child Health and Children’s Hospital, Egmore on Friday saw the launch of its exclusive newborn Operation Theatre and an extension to the existing 40-bedded Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU). The neonatal theatre, which is a centre for excellence will have the facility to operate only newborn babies below one month. “Such a facility, which is not seen anywhere else in the country, is proposed to prevent sepsis among newborn babies. Another facility introduced in the theatre is the thermo bed. When a newborn goes for hypothermia during surgery, the bed will automatically increase the temperature, and decrease in the case of hyperthermia,” said state NICU coordinator, Dr. Srinivasan.
As the operation theatres are air conditioned, the beds will help protect the babies, the doctor added. “Also launched, the extension of 40 beds, to the already existing 40, will help us admit more babies,” he stated.
