Chennai: A 31-year-old doctor employed at a government hospital in the city allegedly committed suicide by jumping off the terrace of his apartment at Pallikaranai on Tuesday night.

The deceased, Dr Anandan, working at Tamil Nadu Government Multi-Super-Speciality Hospital and also at Madras Medical College (MMC),  as a professor is survived by wife, Shalini and twin babies born four months ago.

According to preliminary investigations, Anandan was in a dilemma in recent times, as a promotion awarded recently required him to leave the city and work in one of the villages in Tamil Nadu. He had asked for transfer to a city which reaped no positive reply.

Reportedly, Anandan was already consulting a psychiatrist for some time now.

On Monday night, at around 10:45 pm, he had returned from work to his home at Jayendra Nagar in Pallikaranai and saw his family members. Following this, he immediately rushed to the terrace and allegedly jumped off the building.

Listening to loud alarms from the neighbours, Shalini rushed to the ground floor to see her husband amid a pool of blood. On his way to the nearest hospital, Anandan succumbed to injuries in the ambulance.

Pallikaranai police have registered a case and sent the body to Chromepet government hospital for autopsy. Further investigations are on to find out whether the doctor slipped from the terrace or if it was a suicide.
