1,182 kids enrolled in LKG classes in Kovai government schools

COIMBATORE: As many as 1,182 children including 588 boys and 594 girls are currently enrolled in the lower kindergarten (LKG) classes run in 122 government middle schools in the city.
The social welfare and nutritious meal programme department last year, had passed an order to introduce lower and upper kindergarten classes in the 2,381 anganwadi centers that are functional across the state.
The textile city has 1,697 anganwadi centers and 122 centers are functional in government-run middle schools.
The medium of instruction is English at the schools.
A source from the education department stated that boys and girls between three and four-years-old, are eligible to be admitted to the LKG class. Each child is provided with uniforms, books and shoes.
“While the blueprint for the project was being created, government announced that it will provide four sets of uniforms, a pair of shoes, a sweater for children enrolled in schools in the mountain region and a cap during the rainy season,” a source from the education department said.
The government is expected to incur an overall annual expenditure of Rs 773.32 lakh to run and manage the pre-schools. The programme is being implemented on a pilot basis for a duration of three years.
