Chennai: Irked by continuous power cuts, locals on Tuesday night gheraoed the electricity office in Madipakkam. It is alleged that people of the region have been witnessing frequent power cuts for the last couple of days.
As per reports, residents of the area appraised the department authorities several times but no one paid heed to their woes. Left with no choice, they resorted to the demonstration, said sources.
According to the sources, on Tuesday at around 11 pm, more than 100 residents of Madipakkam staged a protest outside the EB office. Some of the residents even vandalised the electricity office, police said.
“Even in the scorching heat, repeated power cuts by the electricity department has deteriorated the condition of people here. So, we have come here to protest and continue to get an assurance from the authorities,” said a local.
Responding to the allegations, Moovarasampettai assistant engineer said, “We are forced to cut electricity due to regular issues like overloading, snapping of electric wire and other such reasons.
However, we are trying our best to resolve the issue.
“On being informed, the Madipakkam police reached the spot and managed to pacify the irate locals who later around 3 am on Wednesday withdrew the agitation after getting assurance from the authorities concerned. The Madipakkam police also registered a case.
