Kannur: Dead businessman waited long to get civic body’s approval
Sajan, who was close to the CPM, had approached P. Jayarajan and the CPM state committee against the undue delay in getting the certificate.
Kannur: NRK businessman Sajan Parayil, who built the Pardha auditorium complex at Bekkalam in Anthoor, was frustrated as the Anthoor municipality denied it occupancy certificate even after submitting the completion report as per the directions of the municipal officials. This prompted him to commit suicide in his home on Tuesday, it is understood.
Going by the documents of the municipality, Sajan had submitted the completion report on April 13 and was running from pillar to post since then to get the occupancy certificate.
Sajan, who was close to the CPM, had approached P. Jayarajan and the CPM state committee against the undue delay in getting the certificate. Party sources said that the Taliparamba area committee had discussed the issue and a party sub-committee also was formed. Taliparamba MLA James Mathew also intervened to sort out the issue.
It was after the party intervention that the Anthoor municipality consented to carry out a joint verification of the property by the department of town planning and engineering. Both departments recommended issuing the certificate after carrying out minor corrections in the project. The entrance of the auditorium was to the National Highway which was shifted to another byroad to be in tune with the rule. On Monday, Sajan had approached the municipality and waited for hours pleading for the certificate, said relatives. Hoping that the certificate might be issued soon, he had also started receiving booking for marriages. However, many programmes got cancelled due to the delay in getting the certificate. What made him more tense was the attempt by the municipality to deny marriage certificate to a couple who got married at the auditorium recently.
The Anthoor municipality is ruled by CPM with none in the opposition. It is headed by P.K. Syamala Teacher, wife of CPM central committee member M.V. Govindan Master. The relatives of Sajan allege that it was the intra-party squabbles that resulted in the delay and led to his death.
