Bengaluru: Think twice more before littering or dumping in public places. As contemplated, the BBMP will deploy marshals (retired defence personnel) to keep a tab on indiscriminate dumping of garbage and dirtying of public spaces. They are also empowered to levy penalties on violators.

The BBMP Council has taken a decision to deploy marshals at stone quarries, scientific waste processing units and at ward levels. To begin with, these marshals will be deployed at quarries.

Villagers have been protesting against dumping of garbage into Bellalli, Mittaganahalli and Bagalur quarries. The BBMP aims to pacify the protesters by posting the marshals. Also, they will be posted at the seven scientific waste processing plants which too face stiff opposition from communities living around, sources said.

These armed marshals will start work from Monday, and as of now, the BBMP has appointed 15 marshals. They work in three shifts with five members in each shift, sources said. The marshals have been appointed as per the list provided by Sainik Welfare Board.

Each marshal will be paid Rs 25,000 per month. If the council feels that their service had yielded results, their contract would be extended by another year, the sources said.
